THE POSTER IS MUSIC

Selected from the collection of the International Triennial of the Stage Poster – Sofia

From October 5, 2023, residents and guests of Dimitrovgrad will be able to enjoy a collection of specially selected posters dedicated to the great and ubiquitous spiritual innovator – MUSIC. The theme „Music“ is an enduring presence both in the history of the modern poster and in the collection of the only international poster exhibition dedicated to the cultural scene. Formed over the last 29 years, the collection of the triennial is the richest collection of Bulgarian and world posters in our country, it contains remarkable examples of this art, including those dedicated to famous musicians and experimenters; on new and/or established forums, the work of some of the world’s most influential posters, as well as young, debuting authors.

In Dimitrovgrad, the endless theme of music is presented through posters focusing on jazz and classical instrumental symphonic works. The symbiosis between interpretation and provocation – one of the strongest impulses in art finds a natural and effective expression in the 40 posters exhibited in the open space in front of the History Museum in Dimitrovgrad.

Presenting 35 authors and events from different parts of the planet (Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, Iran, China, Mexico, Poland, Serbia, Turkey, France, Czech Republic, Japan), the posters lead viewers through the vast spaces of visual and musical art. The included posters are compelling evidence that beyond posters with photos of musicians there exists an original, artistic poster that is a work in tune with the overall impact of the particular music event.

Among legendary names such as Shigeo Fukuda, Lex Drevinsky, Vladislav Pluta, Roman Calarus, Alain le Kernec, are equally present Dimitar Tasev, Alexander Sertev, Kalina Serteva, Stefan Gruev, Dimitar Traichev, Krasimira Drumeva, etc., as well as the most awarded modern Bulgarian author – the young and talented Ivan Kashlakov.

The exhibition is indicative of how a complex visual art such as the poster manages to so diversely and provocatively present jazz and classics, translating them into the language of contemporary imagery.

“The poster is music” is a sign of respect to Mitya Yordanov and marks the beginning of the autumn’s “Jules Levi” Music Days in Dimitrovgrad. The event continues the traditional partnership between the city and the triennial, which is expressed in a series of exhibitions and in the special award for a Bulgarian author, awarded at the opening of the International Triennial.

The visit to Dimitrovgrad is part of the campaign POSTER – “PROJECTIONS AND PERSPECTIVES”, the aim of which is to return the poster to its most prestigious gallery – the street, including it in various cultural initiatives and festivals throughout the country, an undertaking that the Triennale carries out with the support of the National Fund ” Culture”.
